transmission fluid

I have a 1984 euro 280se with the M110 engine. Noticed the transmission fluid being a bit low and want to add fluid to appropriate level. Can I use dextron III Mercon(sp) sold in auto stores?

The body of this model is 126, but the engine is same as those in the states early 80s 280e. Any help would be appreciated.

Will I expect any significant changes after I bring the level up. Noticed a post on the forum where someone said that when you change fluid on a weak transmission it will slip? I'm not thinking mine is weak but thought I would ask.

Thanks
