In The Realm of Weird (W124)

Today after at least six months of non function the passenger seat electronics worked. Previously the seat would move forward and back but wouldn't recline. The headrest had also refused to go up or down.

Now everything works even the headrest on the drivers seat which went out at about the same time. I haven't touched a thing and was actually about to order some replacement motors for the headrests which I assumed were broken.

Any chance that problem could be related to wiring harness failure? What model year?

Yes, I've had this sort of thing happen to me with a lot of problems, on a lot of vehicles over the years..

I had an 81 Monte Carlo, of which lost all power, and wouldn't exceed 15 mph no matter what I did. I let the car sit for a few months in front of the house. I needed to move it one day, and when i went to move it, I was very surprised to see that it was fine, and back to normal all of a sudden. I started driving the car, and never had the issue again for three years. I was considering selling it and was moving it to clean it up, and put a for sale sign in it in the mechanic's special section of the paper.. WEIRD...The car seemed to have fixed whatever the problem was, all by itself. That was hardly the last time that happened, and not the first either. To this day, I don't have any idea what the problem was or why the car had the power issue.

Recently my right rear window, and right side seatbelt presenter, both did similar things. They were having issues and sometimes didn't function at all. All of a sudden they both started working again a few days ago. I hope they're ok, and don't do that again.

My guess is it is the controller assembly on the door that is actually the switches. That assembly is about $60 if they have one here in the parts section.

1994 E420 on its second wiring harness. That was replaced only two years ago. Its summer here and the car has a done a fair bit of baking in the Sun.

I never got around to checking the current and wiring. It'll be the first thing I do when the controls fail again.

... in other news I saw an engine fire today or at least something incendiary going on. I dropped my brother off at Union Station and when I pulled out a late model Cadillac zipped past me with the worst smoke contrail I've ever seen. At first I thought it was a catastrophic failure of the exhaust system, second I considered the road might have caught on fire (the smell was horrendous), but then passing the vehicle I saw a thick gray smoke slipping out of the front wheel well and up from under the hood. The driver seemed unconcerned and was driving at his leisure.

I have seen something like that once before, but it was a female driver. The engine had over heated in traffic and she keep it on and windows up on that new Lexus and even with it knocking and clattering she ignored people trying to warn here (including me) and then it finally locked up and puked it guts. The supprised look on her face was worth a hot day in a traffic jam on my motorcycle.
