722.366 and 722.370 transmission differences

Hi guys,

Does anyone know what are the differences between those trannies? I want to rebuild 722.366 that came off 1993 400sel and install it into 1992 500sel. I'm sure it will fit but what about internals/shifting/valve bodies differences? I'm affraid 722.366 might get burnt because it might not be rated for more horsepower that 500sel will put out. I probably will need to install vacuum modulator off 722.370. Please help!!!

The internals of the V-8 722.3 transmissions are the same..differences are in the valve bodies & governors. Those differences are due to weight vs torque of the car intended... MB likes to match their transmissions excatly.

What will happen exactly? Will it wear transmission internals prematurely? will it shift funny? I can use my 722.370 governor and valve body. If I do though will I need to order valve body gasket (valve body to transmission body) for 722.370 model? Thanks

I've read about governor and what it does is control pressure in transmission. It seems to be a key element in shifting quality and shifting points. I assume that 722.366 governor is set for higher pressure due to less power 4.2 engine produce thus upshifts at later time. 722.370 should be set to open at lower pressure and should upshift earlier since 5.0 revs up faster and produces more power. If my theory is right then theoretically if I use 722.370 governor into 722.366 it should have pressures just like 722.370.

What about valve body? Theoretically valve body shifting is directly dependend on governor pressure. If governor pressure will be off 722.370 then it will shift right as it should. Am I right? Can someone cofirm that?

You shouldn't have any real issues..the governor could be exchanged as well as the valve body..My bet is you won't feel a bit of difference!

The 400SEL develops torque at a higher RPM so the shift points might be 2-3 MPH higher

I can deal with a little later upshift points. 2 to 3 mph is very little.
Ill rebuild 722.366 and will install into my 500sel.
