m103 main fan clutch question

i have two m103 (190E 2.6 & a 300SE). How does one know when the fan clutch is going or has died?

Hi
Engine starts to heat up in traffic (>100C), even at moderate temperatures and AC off.

Lee, the fan clutch on my '91 has always had the following characteristics:
- Engine cold before cranking - resistance in clutch, when you spin it by hand it will stop within 1/8 of a turn.
- Engine fully warm, between 80-95 degrees. Very easy to turn, will spin at least one revolution if you spin it by hand. You think it's bad it's so loose.
- Engine hot, 100 or above. Tightens up again, similar to when cold.

The fan is very quiet at normal operating range, but when the engine gets up near 100 degrees C, you can hear the fan howl as you accelerate. the electric fans come on about 110 and off again at 100.

I've had the same observations as S-Class Guru.

If your motor is good and warmed up from a fairly long drive and you've just pulled in the drive way, leave it idling, pop hood and have someone turn off ignition while you watch the fan. If the clutch is doing it's job, the fan will stop spinning pretty quick.

If they are not fairly stiff cold, the fluid has all leaked out and they won't work. You CAN refill them, Toyota has the fluid, but the easy thing to to put a new one on.
