Just came in from 4 hours of torture

First thing was I dropped the air cleaner assbly nut

my thumbs are still sore & bit numb from wrestling w one vac hose last night that won

I couldn't find it
got my magnetic wand
couildn't see it after maybe 1/2 hour
so I traced my hand & blindly stiuck the wand into dark crevices where is was likely to have fallen
& I got it

:dizzy2:

Got assemly off pretty easily
but I still can't get to the vac hoses behind WUR
Now I see more of them
no specs to buy so would have to take them in & try to draw a diagram where they coem from & write on notes on them...

Can'rt even get to them
can't even see them all the way as I am shirt & stretching ove the big hood makes it physically impossible for me
I;m not tall enough

Also ignition wires look like if I tried to pull one off it might crack & break
that could have helped the view to move them
but then I;d chance putting it back & really having a broken wire might not be all that good

I guess if I had ther ignition wires I might be able to switch them

Good thing is I found a unconnected vac hose
in such sad condition the end was cracked
It was long enough for me to cut the bad end off & reconnect it to where it must have came off

Thats all I got to do

but at least I was able to change a cracked vac hose & reattach one
Thats someting!!!!

I have pics of the woerd setup
maybe the camera will see behind what my eyes couldnm't

I;ll opsot them in a bit

Ia m achy & famished
form the benz wrack...

:scream:

Beru plug wires are better.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/189418-what-about-spark-plug-wires-mb-cant-just-sell-entire-thing.html?highlight=beru+plug+wires

I like NGK plugs.

For a car with such low anticipated future mileage, it probably would be better to be done with it and have a good set up. It is not likely to be a reoccurring expense for you, for a long, long time : How long will it take to put on another 30,000 miles on the Manganese at this rate?

Maybe when I get the benz refreshed & I get to drive it & enjoy it
& get comfortable who knows
but I haven't even driven 10K in over 20 years

I can get bosche for maybe $80
Beru are $160 haven't seen them lover

At the rate I;m going
I;ll never get out of the garage
I'm no mechanic & my size is a problem...

I am surpried the car is running as good as it is w broken & unconnected hoses. I got 1 changed & the other connected so thats a step in rughr direction.

But then again, maybe I'm waaaaaaaaaay too young for one. I don't know. I wonder what I should do.:eek:

Wow,

Euros's
Think oneof them was brown?

Today was Volvo day
I got the radio out
finally got the hooks I made out of hanger to release the radio
took 3 hours!

then I couldn't loosen screws on case
Good thing is a tweezers retrieved the stuck tape
Arrghhhh
Could have saved 3 hours

so much time wasted & broken back
but guess a shop would have cost $100

Anyway I have radio again in the Volvo

then I took out the cellular phone
been meaning to do that for almost 10 years

LOL

So the Benz got a rest today...LOL

:D

Volvo help

In my 740 owning days I went to www.brickboard.com for help with questions about that car. It is a pretty lively and busy place. Some of the contributors there are quite dedicated, knowledgeable and very funny and witty.

A very helpful place with good people who really know these. A general section and also a specific section for the RWD 740/760/780 models.

I feel that there is LOT to like with those cars. Although they aren't worth much on the resale market these days.

An unforgettable highlight of my 2001 Scandinavian vacation, was when I detoured and visited the Volvo factory museum in Gothenburg. I would highly recommend it. They have representative vehicles from the first 1927 Volvo up to the present day ones, and eye opening exhibits of other aspects of their business, such as the bus, truck, and Penta (marine) lines. Naturally I was especially fascinated by the brand new 1983 760 Euro sedan that they had there on display.

CamelotShadow 09-27-2007 12:47 AM

I had Haynes
All you had to do was retract the clips w hooks
LOL
Took me 3 hrs toget the HANG of it
but I did it...

LOL

Hey
thats some funny Geriatric car ad...

:scream:

Today I called myinsurance
upped benz from 200 to 1500 miles
took volvo from 3000 to 1500

Figured its same mileage spread bet 2 cars
so premium should be same...
it was

Lady complimented me on my choice of cars

:D

Rusty has my dis cap right part # & best price!
He also has beru wires for $30 less...& cheaper fuses

Night

CamelotShadow 09-27-2007 07:37 PM

Volvo spun its wheels

Well least it tried
I thought I was standing still
Suspended animation

But I got accustomed to it again
& its a fun go car...
Was nice to have the radio working ...;)

Really has a great tranny too
for what it is

Went to pick upo the benzes parts at Keyes
They know me now

:scream:

Radiator cap looks really nice
don't mind spenfing $16 on that

Got the plate brackets
lined them up on my diagram
rear will fit
might have to alter the front

I got both plates & screws for less than than ebay front one
$30 for both

:D

Hey they gave me the screws free
they were supposed to be $1.80 eac
I needed 2 back 4 front
didn't charge me

Do you think I should clear laquer the brackets for rust resistance?
Certainly not going to paint them brown

Think metal is fine & you don;'t see it behind the plate anyway

Picked up that air inject check valve hose

Paint is comng from Germany

Guess they don't get much call for
MAgenese brown...

Well,

Need mounting scrww & bolts now
guess that will be home depot
unless I have somethng arounf here
Will need big wide washers to do front maybe back too to make it nice...

OOOh hope it likes its new rad cap..looks better than the german one on it

:scream:

crhenkel 09-27-2007 08:20 PM

Sometimes it does pay to go to the dealer and make friends. I do it and it gets me a discount on everything I buy, i get them at shop prices, which is nice. Free screws are good.

.....

Nothing ....?

Never mind...

The bracket probably doesnt need and thing on it for rust, it shoul dbe good and it is covered anyhow by the plate and your garage roof, so it should see like moisture and since you are not in the midwest, no salt on the roads.

Get your car, rotor and wires...I would recommend buying what you can afford and just being happy with the savings, they are very close the the same, get plugs too, I would still recommend the Bosch factory recommended plug, any parts guy knows which ones they are. Probably even recommends the non resistor plugs, my 86 runs worse on resistor and or platinum plugs, so i just buy the factory plugs and she loves them. And they are cheaper to boot.

NOTE: When you go get hardware to mount the plate bracket, go ahead and spend the extra money, not much more really, and buy stainless steel hardware, they dont seize up as bad and there is no worry of rust. Washers stainless too. They will look better longer also

CamelotShadow 09-27-2007 09:21 PM

Dealer has the parts or can get most wi a day & no shipping

fuses I can really save on linethough.
wanted to charge 80 cents ea
I need 14 so thats $11.20

I can get them 33 cents ea for the copper
dealer only had white metal & I can get 20 of them for half the cost.

Cap looked nice
wouldn't it be nice if a new cap really makes a difference.

Got cap on

I'll get the dis cap from Rusty
he has right part at best price
does rotor just slip on?

I've marked the dis wire caps with there respective numbers that were on the dis cap

Is it just 2 screws & aligning it so the cylinders match?

They say reg plugs are best
I'll see if I can find the recommended which I heard is not to easy to get

The wires really are old but I'd need help with plugs
don't think I even have the tool
bet plugs are ok though so it will wait.

Thanks for the helpful advice

:D

crhenkel 09-27-2007 09:38 PM

CS,
Both Rotor and cap should only fit on one way, usually a tick mark or keyway that fits into a key on one or the other that allows them both to only go on the correct way. if you want to be sure, take a few pictures of them and have all the wires labeled and ready to go and just take old one off and place new one on right away so the way it goes on if fresh in your mind, it will be fine.
Yes, many things are cheaper other places than the dealer and the quality is just fine or just as good. $30 is a nice savings worth it to me as long as it is the correct part and new, it will be fine.

Do your self a favor and I think it sounds as if you are up to it...Get the parts...cap, rotor, wires, and maybe plugs. DO what you can and pay an indy to do the plugs. You should be able to do wires, cap and rotor and that alone would make a difference for sure. Plugs would complete it.

OVP at $51 would be worth it also. Not much left to worry about after that, new rad and res cap, thermostat, distrib cap and rotor, plug wires,OVP, battery, and spark plugs you should feel confident to drive her anywhere.

CamelotShadow 09-27-2007 10:07 PM

Yeah!
Not worrying will be nice.
What will I do when I don't have to watch the temp guage & idle...;)

One more time under the air cleaner assembly

With the distrib wires out of the way or abnle to be moved from behind the warm up reg
I might be able to get to & see the last vac hoses I couldn;t get

I'll take a shot & order the vac hoses
so I can replace one by one

I would have liked to bring it in for a match
but don't like to leave the car all apart

heck you never know
we could get a bad rain & flood
garage could be filling up & I won't beable to move it to safety

Do you know where the idle valve on the intake is?

I couldn;t see anything unless its recessed

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=48102&d=1190781760

I think some people clean it

Might want to look at it

Then get it back together & go for a ride...

Wow its powerful
well compared to a Volvo

Do you know anything about that air inject check valve I reattached?
I got a vac hose for it but can't get to it til I tale air cleaner off agai...

Thanks for the dis cap & rotor advice
I'd never thought it was that simple
& wires should be workable as long as I can get the boots off...

Thanks again!

Bet the car will be happy

:P

Plug wires will be easy to remove since you dont care to save them...Just pull them after a bit of twisting clockwise and counter clockwise on the rubber boot that is fit over the spark plug, they a good pull straight off or even at a bit of an angle. Plug wires can be hard to get off, and reuseable, but you dont want to put them back on, pull till they pop and if they get strained or messed up, who cares. i recommend light ly greasing the inside of the plug boots and the boot that connects to the contacts on the distrib cap with what they call dielectric grease...available at any do it yourself parts shop just ask the guy at the parts counter he knows the stuff. It will keep water out and help the boots come back off easier in the future.

Your idle control valve is about the size of a large prescription bottle of medicine or a small jar of olives ( good description ?) It is a metal cylinder with a hose coming from one end and a 2 pin electrical connection on the other end with a hose coming off the end with the first hose off at a 90 degree angle. See attached photo. i think it is visble in your photo
You can detatch the hoses and clean it out with electrical contact cleaner, carb cleaner, careful, no paint stands up to this, or even WD40 helps it out.

CamelotShadow 09-27-2007 11:11 PM

I'll have to look for the idle valve

Just a safety question?
ANy danger removing ign wires from plugs or dis etc of electrical kind when engineis off?

I wouldn't want anyone to touch these boots & then try to reattach
I can see one on the distributor has a crack in the boot
ehich just means they are beyond there useable life.

Exciting I think I can do wires, dis cap & rotor & get any vac hose I can.

Read about some grease
makes sense to use it

Also would mineral spirits be ok tp soak the idle control valve in?

I have wd 40 guess a few sprays of that far way from the paint would be good.

Thanks

:D
