I would recommend NEW OVP always, I know some try to solder them, but it is not asure fix and it is difficult to get them all and not create new issues. DOnt buy it at the dealer, way expensive, online is best for OVP
To replace fuse on the OVP, pull the whole silver box out and replace fuse with OVP in hand. Pulling fuse with OVP in place sets you up to pull more on the red plastic cover that is supposed to not move and not be removed, but it gets lose and then contacts can start to go bad. Dont be afraid to do new fuses, get a good pair of pliers and go at it, it is a good was to be sure of elect issues and get practicee with tools. Temp sender should be a good one if the gauge reads even close to the right temp. The senders that are bad go bad with a full ground and that peggs the needle to the max. A wavering needle is usally the instrument cluster connections themslelves. Long story on how to fix that, involved too. |
Your red light that came on for a bit and then off that shows "RS" is likely your Euro version of the Restraint System, showing that the seat belt is or isnt fastened or that it checked itself and thought for a sec something might be wrong and then decided it was ok and turned the light off. The SRS light always should come on for a sec or two when the car starts up, maybe yours is intermittent for some reason, could be a thousand
reasons and all of them are hard to find. if it went off dont worry. It is wasnt the o2 sensor or the check engine dont worry, if it comes back on note what it was. Those lights come on for all sorts of reasons and most are useless ones. if it stays on, then it is something to check into, no really until then. No way to track it if the light goes back off, not like a computer code stored or anything. |
Well, we took a ride
local to the MB dealer I really have to get used to the car so different than Volvo it seemed steering had nn feel this afternoon so I took it around the block first to make sure everything was ok The steering is very sensitive I got out of the garage took the angle well no scrap then over sterred a bit turning Just had to get the feel of it again. Started w idle a little less this am as it was started yesterday night maybe 1200 1300 as opposed to 1500 last night The light I think was next to the RS I didn't have my seatbelt on last night as I wasn't planning to drive it just wanted to start it & run it a bit to check things I found the light thingy its a up & down dial on the right of the light switch I used it today in the garage but didn't see any beam change have to figure that out could be that 16 amp was needed in that? have to see low beams came on so they were working Might have to ask the curbstoner w the great memory where it was next time I call for the papers Passed his house actually on way to Keys He wasn't home but on the way back his car was there & another 4 door meecedes The 2 he had last time were gone... Went to Keys ordered the plates as they were same price & got some vacumn tubing & hoses Ordered a touch up paint too. came back to the car about hour later first start try lots of cranks no good 2nd time I depressed accelerator as I turned & started right up It had cooled to about 40 C Ran I guess 95 100 actually on way home think it went down to 90 :D I asked about the VMI put the vin in & it came out gray marke only info was date 5/10/82 Its a 82 production I did try to deciper data cose 2 is first number & thats Bremen 1982 So its really not a 83 :freak: OK he made a mistake but maybe its better I got 1 vac hose for the warm up reg I;ll use it for the taped one & then order the others online cheaper he was supposed to give me 3 but he didn't so thats there loss. I didn't get there fuses as they only had white metal & thery were 70 cents to $1 as opposed to 33 cents to 50 Anyway he didn;t have blue & only had 1 red The place I;m ordering from has the OVR $51...maybe I'll get it after if things still r ??? OK heres the ????? after the second start I got a bit scared it ran a lil lumpy so I decided not to go on my others errands & just get it home Its hot 90 C how long do I ahve to wait to change the one hose on the warm up regular? I also got a quad & a tri & some long tubinh I cvan cut for straight vac hoses. Is there a problem taking off a vac hose I don't want to hurt anything or myself Well car got a run I was actually enjoying the drive home a bit just have to get used to driving it & more confident of its functionality... |
Good you are on top of it. Next time take it out on the freeway for awhile; it really builds confidence and is the best thing in the world for these cars. - And for you....
Believe me, after awhile, you will REALLY like driving it, once you are familiar with it. Once you have the seating position just right, you will really love it, and it will fit you like an old shoe. The seats are really, comfortable and supportive in these, you can go for hours in them with no trouble. The thumbwheel dash adjuster is a Euro-only item and MAY not be compatible with the unfortunate US headlights that were added to the car. (Not sure, just my guess.) So long as the US headlights are properly adjusted and aimed, you should be all set. But for sure, put a set of good Euro headlights on the "wish list" - they are the best single addition the car could possibly have. Write to the MB historical archives for the build sheet on the car. Be sure and ask for it in English. See if you can get a wheel lock key on the next trip; worst come to worst, maybe a flathead or Phillips screwdriver might work as an emergency wheel lock. This is why I don't like wheel locks. My next set of wheels will be without them. (no action omn the wheels today btw, thnx for asking) |
Vac hoses are not under any pressure with car off and not anything to worry about even with car running, except removing a vac line is likely to kill the engine if it is running when you remove it. They just pull off and push back on, nothing at all special about them. The angled end fittings do not have to be the same angle either, it is just important to use what ever routes the hose the correct direction. In actuallity you could even use a 3way or 4 way in place of a 2 way or a 3 way and use a golf tee to plug up the extra open hole until you can get the correct fitting, as me how i know...:wacky:
Order a bunch of fuses online it is better and eventually they all are prone to corrosion and oxidation which can cause an intermittent or lack of a connection. You can even usually buy them at places like autozone and advance auto, etc. Always replace the spares back in the fuse box when you use one, you need them to be there, trust me, again, ask me how I know... The fuses can be hard to find at stores when you really need one and dealerships are not open late or on Sundays. $51 for the OVP is a great deal on that, mine for my cars is usually more and I am a serious bargain hunter for low cost on good parts. I dont buy poor qualitly, but i do want the lowest price on a good quality part. Silly story, but something to remember...I went through a long process of finding the rear flex disk for my 16v and finally found it at a place on line that had a good price and the correct part number ( it changed half way through the year production run and is sort of hard to find online) I ordered it and a few other parts and they showed up last week, but I was waiting on bolts on back order, they came today and I found out the flex disk was STILL the worng part even though I was very specific. I said the heck with it and called the dealer and ordered it....it was cheaper at the dealer than anywhere on the internet. Yep, you will find things are not always cheaper than the dealer. This was $5 cheaper on a $60 part. Always give them a chance, they are local, typically get parts in 2-3 days, will take returns as long as the part is over $10 ( at least mine has this policy) and they are able to be sure they are ordereing the correct part for your specific car. Plus you canget the print out they have that shows the exploded diagram and it shows the way things are installed and what parts are available seperately. |
I just want to comfortable with tha car
I havven't driven on the freeway in about 5 years... Got to have confidence in the car first & need a few drives to get the hang of it Really only driven it a few times. So do you think its ok to change my first vacumn hose its on the top...easy to get to I got one blue vac line too not sure if I;ll attach it yet depending on if I have access to both ends & I think they all are fed from under air cleaner. I saw the lights do something they changed beams they did move or make some adjustment |
The euro headlamp adjuster do not usually work with the US headlamps on your car. If they do, good for you, but yours look like US units. Jim is correct in saying that the most beneficial thing you can add to your car is Euro headlamps. They provide so much more light and it is better focused on the road also. Plus your car would have originally had them and the height adjuster will work with them. They are avery easy install and it is literally 3 to 4 bolts for each one to remove them and install the new ones. Also, in your garage spot you just mark the front tire location on the floor and put an x on the wall where the headlamps shine when it is darker at night and then after you install the new euro lights, just adjust the new beams to hit the same locationon the wall. you can do the whole task yourself

Did see the beam change & move
They say bosch are they bosch US? something was working on them just have to figure how Can I change that one vac hose on the warm up reg? I also got a a few more to order just wanting to see if that taped hose has any leaks Still its just a warm up reg & should only affect warm up? Sorry I missed the post above..bad me... :D |

ok, here is my humble opinion and believe me, I hate spending my money on parts I dont need!
Buy a new OVP before you worry about anything else, regardless of what is up with the car, the OVP is a rascal and if it is not a problem now, it is likely to be soon if it is the original part. Dont throw the old one away, save it as a spare. $51 is a good price. Second, change any vac line you can get your little hands on. Do it now or later, but change them all that you can see, you will fix or stop some leaks or just get new good seals and fittings, either way, you are money ahead cause vac leaks are a bear and casue all sorts of little issues Third. if you headlamps move, VERY cooL! They look like us headlamps, but who knows with a euro car. You can tell for sure by parking about 12 feet from a wall at night and rotating the thumb wheel at the headlamp switch up or down. You should see the beam moving up or down right away. Oh, car engine MUST be running for them to work, there is nothing electrical involved in the movement up or down, it is purely off of vacuum, there is a bladder with a piston on it in the headlamp assembly and it pushed or pulls the headlamp housing to raise or lower the beam. No engine running, no vacuum present, no beam movement. And lastly, When was the last time the car hasa new plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap? If you dont know, put it on your list. to do. Get all the parts on line and if it is a money thing, hold off on the wires, but not anything else. You will be amased at what new plugs and capa nd rotor will do for an engine with a idle issue. Plus until you do thisi, you cant rule it outas a possibility. |

I agree thats why I went to the dealer to see what they had or could get & price. I got part number on vac hose bought one there supposed to get 3 but only one got in the list anyway I can get the other 2 for the price of one & I know its the right part Thing is they couldn't find a order for the blue fuses maybe they don't use those anymore so I;ll just order a box of 20 each online as I said they show copper wire All MB had was white metal & they were 70 cents when I can get them for 33 cents & the white & red are Flosser made in Germanyt The blue is aftermarket seems the blue is hard to get. but they had the vac hose & the license brackets will be in tomorrow\ He couldn't find the screw item number for them have to order that tomorrow arrgh |

Now I cant remember You're right if its a vacumn then it makes sense I see the vac valve near the lights has a looks like thinner vac hose could be part of the ABS too As I said I saw them do something looks like a pattern change liek on a flashlight that changed the beam not necessarily up or down though Still cool Wires look real old orig blue now black A set of bosch is under $100 on the site I:m ordering The site doesn't have the right plugs but I can't change those Wires I should eb able to handle save me $50 to $100 from the shop. |
Yes, If your wires are the blue ones and they are now black, get new ones. Get the cap, the rotor and plugs too. Get wires and your vac lines and then just enjoy it for a while. You really need to know when the ignition parts were replaced last so do them, it will run better, start better and idle better very likely.
The fuses with the copper colored metal as supposedly the ones that are less likely to oxidize. They will all work, but I would buy the copper ones when you can. Not trying to spend your money, but the OVP and the ignition parts and plugs should be a big improvement if you ahve idle issues and hot start issues. Even if it isnt, you will likely pay as much to have Enrique tell you it is fixed when it isnt or that nothing is wrong. AND you will have new parts where they count and will know that they are good and will be able to focus on other issues and know when to change them next since you now have a time line of when they were installed. I am not positive, but I would say you mgiht just fix your idle with the cap rotor plugs and wires and ovp but at the minimum she will run and start better. |
You can too change plugs! iT IS SUPER SIMPLE ON THAT ENGINE, LOTS OF ROOM TO GET AT THEM. I would bet you could get a neighbor fella to help out for a beer too! They are easy to get at, very easy to change and only require a ratchet with an extension and the correct deep well socket.
You will pay $80 to have $15 worth of plugs installed. The cap and rotor are even easier. They only fit on one way and you shouldnt even have to remove the wires to do it, new wires are done one at a time like you said earlier. easy peasy I can tell you step by step how to do them if you want, like long distance repair from Illinois Heartland |
I thought pplugs needed a torque wrench?
I just got a blister changing the one bad vacumn hose w electricla tape Itstight too w aircleaner on Finally got old off & connected hose first trying to get it as far in as I could but it may be just 1/4 inch...hard to tell from squeezing the outside how far it is but got the big end on the reg housing all the way down & it seems pretty much same position is was Then tried for one coming out from the intake manifiold going to a valve won drivers side exhaust so I am assuming its likely the O2 sensor came off the valve easy enought but couldn;t budge it off the hose wonder if they glued it after the blister started to swell & about ha;f hour of no where I attached it back to the valve I may have to cut it off... Fuses & vac hoses are not turning out as easy as they look Spark plugs could eeven give moore of a problem I have tools not sure if I have that. Took off exp rad cap still was under pressure some came out little I;m a bit worried as there is some scum floating on top. Now I know there was nothing floating before the radiator was changed still it worries me if it could be oil. Head oil cap is clean & inside is clean so I'm just hoping its not a gasket. Spark plugs are very accessible you are rught with that maybe the pass side back is a bit tight. Good thing MB didn't give me 3 of those 45 vacumns the other hose on the warm up regular does not have a hig head & the reg port there may be smaller. so I might not order that I see blue on a about inch by dis cap but rest is black do they make one with a blue patch hard for me to believe a plug wire is all black now but I do see some cracking in areas on some They are old I don't think puttin gon the boots should be too hard yet thats what I thought about vac hoses... Now that was 3 hours playing with 2 vac hoses & looking at coolant Good thing I don';t cahrge myself $80 a hour :scream: thanks so much for the advice... Bosch dis cap is $44 they have bosch rotor & beru...Beru is $10 bosch is $14 Will a beru rotor work a bosch dis cap? How are Bosch ignit wires for $96 they have Karlyn for $82 & they look ok Maybe I can do a cap sounded hard as they said line something up Be nice to havce that new car deserves it really needs it Wonder what Enrique would charge? Still he thinks its fine |
