Need help replacing gear selector lever
I am having difficulty replacing the gear selector lever on my '93 600SL. I have done all the preliminary work removing the console, etc., but cannot find any instructions on removing the existing selector lever. No reference to this is on the Star 129 dvd or anywhere else I have searched. The Russian parts site shows my configuration but from this it is not clear to me how the lever is removed. Hense, my questions are these: 1 - how is the lever removed, and 2 - is there a replacement shaft available that does not contain a fixed handle that will fit in this configuration? Obviously, the shaft I have aquired that is threaded will not do the job. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

The early 140 (92-94) shift lever had a bayonet mount, you had to push down very hard and then twist. I dont know if the 129 had the same setup but it could be. There have been some that broke the mounting clevis trying to get the old one out, I think Performance Products sold a shaft that was bayonet/threaded on the upper portion.
I attempted to remove mine once and did not pursue once it did not go willingly |

Thanks, Peter, for your input. I sense that you are correct about removing the old shift lever. When I look closely at the yoke where the shaft goes in, there is a spiral slot that appears would accept the type of original shift lever I have. Hense, the only way to get the old shaft out would to turn it in the opposite direct from that used to insert it. I assume that would be to the right facing the yoke. I will try Performance Products for a replacement shaft. Thanks again.

Follow up on my previous post... fortunately I have a good friend working in the parts department of the local M/B dealership that certainly has proved helpful on several occasions, this being one of them. Turns out there are no alternatives to replacing the original shaft/handle combination on my vehicle with an aftermarket. No one makes a bayonet based shaft required in my configuration. So I have to use an original replacement part. As far as removing the existing lever, there is supposedly "trick" to the process and he is having one of the techs in the shop call me with the details. If anyone is interested in more information concerning the project, I'll be glad to share them when I complete the task. The shaft/handle combination has to come from Germany so it will take at least a week to get the parts.

I would still check with PP it shows an adapter for the 140
http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/productpage.aspx?pid=110835&name=Shift+Knob+Adapters , MB only would know about official items. The proceedure was to push it down in "d" and twist, hefty spring, soak it down with penatrant. Still the same caviat on breaking the yoke! Last edited by Peter Guenther; 08-29-2007 at 05:01 PM. |
