W126 Euro Light Conversion
I got a nasty suprise this morning when I went out to my car and found someone had backed into my passenger side lamp assembly. Not sure what it was. The corner light is gone, the headlight is intact and working but pushed back into the engine bay 2-3". Needless to say, I'm going to need a complete new assembly.
I haven't checked prices at the salvage yard as it is Sunday, but have done a search on the Euro light conversion. I found lots of information but still have a couple of questions. Do I need a new filler panel to fit between the bumper and headlight, or will the US one work? (I dont plan on using any wipers, btw). How extensive is the wiring alterations, and what is the "city light"? Fianlly, are these lights easy to aim, already aimed, or is the vaccum adjuster a necessity? I'm looking at the kit from KATMAC.COM, has anyone had any experience with these guys? Thanks for the great help, this site has been, and I'm sure will continue to be, the most useful maintenance source I have had since I got my car. '85 300SD, by the way

You do not need a new filler panel to install Euro headlamps. The difference is all in the headlamp unit.
Wiring is simple - use the original pigtail. If you want the corner lights to be on while using the parking lights, you just splice together the city light wire and corner light wire - not the turn signal wire. City lights are the small bulb next to the main bulb. They are used in the "parking light" position. If you are on a well lighted city street stopping & starting, head lights aren't really necessary. Euros are easy to adjust. If you buy them from Katmac, they won't come w/ the vaccum adjusters. Just manually set them once & have done with it. I have a pair of Katmacs. They work OK. The glass is 1st class, but the connections and plastic housings are low quality. |
