190E lag on initial throttle application

When I drive my 190E (5-speed) quickly, I notice that the initial throttle response is poor. It seems to be regardless of the revs, gear you are in or the speed you are going. When you initially step on the throttle there's a bit of a delay before it takes off. It's almost as if the car's initial repsonse is to actually start slowing down, before it suddenly gets fuel and then takes off. That is speculation though! I've checked the air flow sensor moves without getting stuck and it seems to sit right?
It's not bad but ruins the car for driving quickly.
It's the M102 four-cylinder, 16v version.
Thanks in advance.
