We own a 1998 E 250 Diesel Automatic. There is a slight rattle (like some small part vibrating) that is heard when the engines revs up just before changing to a higher gear. I find it can be heard if one puts one’s ear to the gear selector. The noise is not loud and cannot be heard if the music is playing softly. Should I do anything about it and what could be the cause of this ?

Unless there is some loose change dropped into the gear selector slots, it could be a shifter bushing.

Mine wore out a couple of years ago on my 300E, but it had an annoying "squeak", rather than a rattle...

Thank you for your response. If it’s a shifter bushing should the noise reduce if one holds or presses down the gear shifter when it begins to rattle? In case something has fallen into the slot, how does one open the cover to remove whatever may have fallen in ? Looking forward to your reply

Just replaced the bushings on my 420SEL. It would rattle/squeak at higher RPM but could make it go away by holding onto the shift lever. The bushings are inexpensive and can be replaced from underneath the vehicle without removal of the shift selector plate inside (if same set-up as my 420. Rather easy DIY job for me. Good luck.

Thumbs up Open the wooden console

What you need to do is to remove the wooden console near the shifter. Then unscrew all 4 screws around the shifter. You can see the shifter is attached to a horizontal rod tied. Look at the spring. There is some kind of bushing which has crushed into pieces. replace the bushing and you can see the difference.
good luck
