The 38 pin connector is the same on all models. Your 97, I don't think it will take pulse codes. I hope you have a digital code reader.

. . . question

Benzmac,

are you saying that you can't use a 'grounding' technique to reset the DTCs?

I agree that a 'scanner' would be just great for what John is doing but won't the grounding technique work?

Essentially that what the scanner does, only electronically.

97 SL320 x11/4 CONNECTOR

Yes, That is what I mean. But, I need a pictorial showing the orientation of the connector, so I know how to identify them. Talking to Jimf on this thread, there is a way to manually reset my SRS light. He gave me the pictorial of the S class. He said to jump pin 30 and 1 for 3-5 seconds, disconnect, wait 8-10 sec and repeat jumping pin 30 and 1 for 10 sec. All this is done with the ignition key to "on" position. Then, turn key off for 30 sec and try.. should go off but it did not.. Any ideas..?? Please Advise, Thanks

John

. . . . X11/4 pin configuration

John,

All pins in the connector are the same for all years for cars that use the 38 pin connector. Of course, some cars/models have more 'goodies' than others and the pins are more populated than others.

The connector pinout can be found on my page under Menu #2. Here's what it looks like.

Donnie is absolutely correct about your scanner needs. The difference is like morse code versus the telephone.

All cars designed after 1994 (the 124 body doesn't fall in this catagory) require a serial data scanner. The car has too much to say to do it by morse code!! A few systems can be impulse counted after 94 to about 96, but not SRS.

I would really love to show you the difference. Which brings up an idea I will explore on a new post.

On the 124 chassis readout charts I have, there are 2 data signal readings. One is for the LED pulse system and the other is the digital.
So you can get a , let's say 4 pulse led flash, but with the scanner the same plug will give you 4 or 5 different 3 digit readings. These will pinpoint the diagnoses down to the finer point.

An example of the chart shows 2 flashes with led, but with the scanner it shows 002: ect sens- shorted
003: etc sens-open circuit
004: etc sens-implausible
005: etc sens-intermittent contact.

A "Footnote" at the bottom of the page in reference to the Led flash system states"
"Only possible uo to end of model year 1995."

I would assume , on these models that did have the built in LED, that if that feature is not there , it is no longer possible to get the Led Flash and the scanner is the tool.
Will be nice to see SB's article on this one.

. . . that answers my question

Steve's answer clears up why the 'manual' simulation didn't work. Since John's car is a '97, it must be pure serial digital.

Well, if you consider getting a scanner, there's at least two choices;
1) buy an OBDII type scanner such as "OTTOSCAN" or;
2) buy a MB X11/4 scanner such as the AST's "RETREIVER" or "POINTER". Also newly marketed is the "PALM SCANNER".

The price varies from around a low of $450 to $2000. Personally I like the X11/4 type better but they are usually more expensive. Since there is a lot of competition for OBDII scanners, they are lower priced.

I purchased the AST 'POINTER' and it is a mid-stream priced scanner.
