Changing transmission fluid experience
First time I ever did the trannys, but went all out and did all three yesterday and today. Learned a couple of things.
1. Never, never, never put two washers on the drain plug for the torque converter. I missed the one that was already on there, put another one on and buttoned everything up. Looked under the car as I was checking fluid level and fluid was almost pouring out of the TC lower access hole. ![]() 2. I put 6 quarts in the 400 before starting the car and fluid poured out of a plastic thingy on the right side of the tranny. I guess you should just put a few quarts in, start the car, run it a minute, shut it down, and put the rest of the fluid in. That is what I did with the SL and had no problems. Torqued all pan bolts to 106 inch pounds, and no leaks so far. 3. Had to drop the left side exhaust on the 400 after the drain debacle for the TC. to get it snugged up tight, as there was just not enough clearance to torque it right. The SL had plenty of room between the TC and exhaust. ![]() ![]()
