If your mirror is anything like the 123 mirrors, they're held fast by two spring-loaded pins. They can be removed by simply pulling downward (slowly but firmly) on one side at a time.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, but when I said "123 mirror," I meant the mirrors in the W123 cars such as my '84 300D. Your car must be a W201, and I do not know if the mirrors remained the same throughout the years and body style changes. Someone else will have to chime in on that.

The point is, have you tried removing the mirror by hand, in the manner I described? I know you may be fearful of breaking the mirror, but (again, if it's like mine) it should pull off one side at a time.

While I don’t know about your car specifically, every German car I have ever owned (4 different brands, but now only MBZs) had the same delicate procedure for removal: A GOOD FIRM YANK . Direct the force somewhat forward & down, as the mirrors are designed to disengage when an object (an unbelted idiot’s head, for example) strikes them during an accident.

Thank you all for your replies. I am now off to rip off an object from my baby. I hope she doesn't mind!!
