201.034 ignition control unit

Is it true the 16 valve ignition control unit is not interchangeable with the EZL ignition of the normal 8 valve ICU? The part numbers are different, I know that already..

they are not interchangable

But would the 8 valve ICU run the 034's ignition just to test for a bad ICU?
