Need advice on changeing engine mounts on a 99 S420. I have seen DIY articles on other vehicles and wonder if is basically the same or are there issues I should know about.

I changed them on my car 1998 E430 W210... It was not hard at all. I think I posted some pix.. as well.. They say the the oil pan will support the engine, but I am not sure about your car.. There are two bolts a top and a bottom you can undo them without the engine fallen out... then jack up the engine about 2in then pull out the mount then push in the new.. Once you see the new one you can see how simple it is..

2" sounds like a lot. On my E300 1/2" was plenty.

If you do lift the engine higher than that pay special attenten to the MAF/air filter housing, fan baldes and exhaust so you dont break anything. I think WIS tells you to disconnect all those items before doing this job.

Yeah I may have been exageratating... About the 2 in.. Just high enough to pull it out.. Yeah I had to check thos things..

Thanks, I can get the mounts for about $220. My mechanic want's $580 to do the job. I think he is milking me, just had him change the control arm bushings and it cost me $890 including a front end allignment.

Yes, he is high on cost I think. They do have expenses though. By the book that might actually be a high hour labor job, dont know. Do know I did mine and it was a realatively easy task.
When you do the motor mounts, just be cautious when you lift the engine so you dont lift it higher that the fan blade, hoses, wiring, etc will allow. there is only so much slack in these items before you have listed the engine too high. You dont need to go very high to clear the motor mounts to get them out. One side is always more difficult than the other due to the a/c and other parts, but it is a simjple task over all.

Well, I decided to take the car to my mechanic cause I just wasn't sure that the mounts were causing my problem. He took another look and discovered my problem was the stabilizer links. He replaced them and the noise is gone. Engine mounts were a little flat but not causing any issues, so save that job for another day.

I just had my '02 S430 at Park Place to check out a noise and they are telling me it is the Engine Mounts. The noise sounds like I am driving next to a F250 power stroke diesel and I only hear it on the inside of the car. They want $1400 for the repair which seems really high.

Also, who is your mechanic in Dallas? I'm not using my old mechanic anymore and need a new one that is cheaper than PP.

I do not even want to think about engine mounts.

Not a problem on my Mercedes, but my Lexus (that I am giving to my mom) is in dire need of motor mounts.

It started off as a light vibration at certain RPMS when driving, now its vibrating moderately and is very annoying on a car that is supposed to be smooth as silk. But, its a 1991, nearly 220K miles and ready for a set, but the dealer wanted $660 (parts/labor). I have found the mounts as low as $90 each (which I think is still way too much) and I have a friend at work whose father is a Toyota-Lexus tech that will do it for me for $150 labor at his home garage, so thats not as bad, since he is also going to replace the transmission mount, which is fairly easy on these, but the engine mounts are a pain on the V8 Lexus.
