Lots of good information in this thread concerning maintenance and oil changing habits. I happen to fall into the "change oil and filter more often" category. My 2001 SLK230 has the FSS service system. With my driving habits, it takes 13,000 miles for the FSS indicator to turn on. Since I drive 6,000 miles per year, I don't want to go through 2 summers and 2 winters on the same oil and filter. So, I change my oil and filter every 6,500 miles using Mobil 1 0w-40 & MB Oil Filters.

My '93 190E 2.3 gets a new MB filter and Castrol GTX every 3,750 miles instead of the recommended 7,500 miles since I bought the car new. I don't know if the next owner of my cars will appreciate my attention to oil change habits, but I prefer to do it for my own piece of mind. I also replace my air filters in both cars at half the recommended intervals.

I always thought that if I was the type of car owner that traded cars every 3 to 4 years, then it wouldn't matter. I'm sure you could drive a new car 50,000 miles without an oil change, then change the oil and filter and no one would know when you sold it or traded it in.

Oil changes

It ceases to amaze me that people purchase very expensive cars and then complain about a cheap oil and filter change!

I change oils and filters on my fleet every 6 months or 5000 kms and 20 years later they still run like new - as they say "Change it hot and change it often".

For some , it is all about image to impress while neglecting the image in which they propel themselves.
Might as well just walk around in an expensive suit kicking yourself in the balls.
