Is it possible to accurately test an ignition coil?

This is actually on a 99 VW bug. Lately, in rainy conditions, the car misses for a while until warmed up. Plugs and wires were replaced within the past two years, so I'm thinking the coil is on its way out. It's pushing the CEL, but the code only points to misfiring. Also, is there a way to test the wires, too? I do have a multimeter. Thanks!

A couple of Quickie wire test..

When rainy, spray the wires w/WD-40 and then run the car...if that solves the skipping, change the wires.

Another test is just the opposite..spray the wires with a fine mist of H2O..if it skips , change the wires.

..and lastly, look under the hood on a real dark night w/engine at idle..looking for any plug wire arcing...you will see them in the dark.

.An oscilloscope tells all, but these are old DIYer tricks that work for those who have not the proper tools/equipment.

If the wires are alright, would it do any damage to mist the coil with water?

No..

..you may also want to look at each wire end that sticks into the cap..they are suscepticle to poor connections..also pop the cap and see if there is any evidence of moisture ..a hair dryer works good here , along with a light spray of WD-40 [ Water Displacement is what WD does/stands for and that is why you spray the wires with it when the ambient moisture is high ..like a rainy/damp day ..the WD dries the moisture content out of porous wires , allowing proper plug firing].
The WD is the preferred method over the H20 trick.....reminding you that this is not a remedy, but rather a diagnostic trick.. [ although I do know guys who have sprayed their wires every rainy day for years and kept the tank running.....but that is the same guys who hang the exhaust up w/coat hangers 'til the hanger rust thru......

How do you check the wires with an ociliscope? My father has one and I never thought to use it, I guess I wouldnt know how to test them for sure.

Google " Secondary Ignition wave patterns ".

Scopes are a little tricky for inexperienced , but the info is there..
