3 or 4 lining disks for the B3 on a 722.4
Hi Guys
It seems there is a bit of a shortage on transmission repairs on the forum, so I thought I'd start a few threads as I put together my 722.400. I have a dillema, and I'm looking for an experts opinion. I got a rebuild manual from MB for the 722.400 transmission, and in the manual, it states to use 4 lining disks with 5 steels discs on the B3 clutch, however, so far all my clutches even the B3 use only 3 lining discs and 4 steels. My dillema is that I'm trying to get the measurements for the B3 correct, and the steels I have are a little thin. I have the opportunity to shave some of my current discs (I have 7 in total, I had to get a few new ones since the old ones were burnt up) to any thickness I want. naturally, I would not shave them past the minimum thickness that they can be obtained on. By doing this I hope to achieve the correct measurements for the B3 clutch, with 4 lining discs. In other words, I would go from 3 lining discs and 4 thick steels, to 4 lining discs and thinner steels. Personally I don't see how this could cause any problems, but, I'm not a pro at this yet, and would like to hear some opinions. My thoughts are that as long as the spring on the transmission housing for the B3 has no issues with this, I would not have any problems. Thanking you in advance xp

No, you don't want to do that.
The "early" 722.400 had 3 lined clutches..MB # 201-272-00-25 & later versions used 4! There are 2 different sized metal clutches 2.5mm or 3.0mm & also 3 different sized compensation washers. That is the way to make the clutch adjustment come out correctly. SELECT fit is the definition.

In that case I'm a little confused.
According to the literature I have, it's the early versions that had 4 lining discs, mine is the later one apparently, and it has 3. Now if anyone can verify this by trans number, this is mine 123 270 77 01 722 400 0221853 The reason I say it is the later one is that from the teardown, I found a V2 valve body, updated B2 piston, later Stator (the one without the hat washer), and probably a few other things, I can't think of right now, this is all based on my literature, if that's wrong, well then I'm wrong as well. It is possible that someone has been in this transmission before me, but from tearown, I don't see any signs of that. To give a bit more history on the situation. My B3 Steels are burnt up and pitted and worn out since the lining on 2 out of the 3 discs fell off exposing the steel under it, so it was steel on steel contact. I checked the manual for the thickness of the steels and it came up with 2.3mm and 2.8mm for the inner ones, and 2.8, 3.3, and 3.5 for the outer one, however, the thickness of the steels in my transmission was nothing like it. I'd have to measure them again to get the exact numbers, but I went with the closes measurement and ordered a few replacements, they turned out to be much thinner, or maybe I just need another one, however, I have not measured anything yet, I'm waiting for my depth gauge to get home to do that. xp190

I thought I'd add a picture to show the damage done to the B3 Steels
This is apparently a very common problem on the 722.4's where the B3 lining flakes off causing the clutches to burn up. As far and the lining Discs, well, this is what the look like I figure the old steels would chew up the new liners in a matter of minutes, so there is no way they are going back in. xp
