Whining sound from somewhere

Hello. Got at 2.3 Kompressor, C class 230 coupe with 6spd manual...lately I have noticed a whining sound comming from the gear box..(at least I think it is comming from there). No specific gear, no specific speed, and im driving the car in -10C to +4C weather. What could be the cause. Thanx in advnace
