Question New E420 - ASR / Check Engine light - let's discuss ETA

I just purchased a E420 (1995), and the ASR / Check Engine lights both came on after the car was hot

I'm thinking it's the ETA issue, as the car has 185K miles.

Please suggest comments about rebuilt vs new ETA's
Does FastLane sell ETA's or is this a dealer only item.

Then there are the rebuild options. Found some references to Jaytan Industries, Inc. Do you have experience with them - are they to be trusted.

K6JRF has a great article describing the same symptoms I have
http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_asr.html

Summary:
Are rebuilt ETA worth the savings, or should I just buy a new one - and where should I buy it?

Many thanks.

Jaytan would be my last choice at the present time; currently having difficulty with them making a "good" fuel distributor for a '92 SL500. Three (3) tries and it's still 'bad'. . . very bad.

Personally would recommend Beckmann; I've had one rebuilt and it works perfectly.

However, make sure you dump the DTCs first. . . could be a simple brake switch or a bad Neutral Safety Switch. These are cheap devices.

Besides the light, what are the symptoms? Could be ETA...could be harness...could be a case of Code 19.

no real acceleration

The car has no real acceleration, and flings me back and forth occationally

All works fine with a cold engine.

Then things get a little funky with a warm engine

(Had the same symptoms with the 500SEL - 1993 - replaced the ETA then, that's why I'm thinking that's the solution

But yes - will wait for the Indy to read the codes.

Got the codes "sort of"

Took the car to my independent mechanic.

He pulled the codes when I wasn't there and reported codes showed for:
  • ETA
  • Break Light switch
  • Timing sensor (my words)

And he showed me the engine wire hardness should be replaced.

My next actions are to replace the wiring harness and the Electronic Throttle Actuator (ETA). Figured the ETA will need replaced - if it doesn't now.

This will be a slow project - especially since the car is not immediately needed. But will post pictures as progress is made.
