explain transmission "flare" when it shifts
I think I know what is meant by the term "flare" when refering to the transmission shifting. Can I please get an explaination so I am sure. I have a Superior transmission spring kit on the way but I need to be sure I am addressing the correct tranny issue. I am dealing with my 1986 W201 190E 2.3-16v Yes, it has an auto in it, and I like it that way.
![]() Thanks

Same thing as happens when you have a clutch on the way out in a manual gearbox. Revs rise, car remains at same speed.

before doing any transmission work, check engine!
I was getting flare (slipping) on my transmission *450sl 77) when gear shifting, turned out to be engine vacumn and tuning. Car shifts smoothly after new spark plugs and tuning. regards, Abe g

A flare is a Quick slip shift, caused by two shift components engaging or disengaging are the wrong time, shift overlap. Which gear has a flare. Have you ever disassembled a MB valve body that kit is not an easy installation

I have done some minor work on transmissions, nothing major. I do all other work on the car and engine though.
I think the flare is on the 2-3 shift. it seems to go to 3rd almost right after it shifts to 2nd...
