I've done this job on my 380SE, which has the 116 engine, and if I'm not mistaken, your SL has the same 117 engine as in my '86 560SL. The job is the same for both engines.
I used the Mercedes 116 engine shop manual for the job, and it described the procedure exactly. It's not a terribly difficult job, just tedious, and you'll need a spring compressor that will work on these engines. Others have recommended and used aftermarket types, I have a copy of the Mercedes tool that I made myself.
I seriously doubt there is anything on that site that would add much to this. There's quite a bit of good free info in the archives here too.
