Your Opinion Flex Disk Cracks

I have what I feel is a significant vibration at about 80 MPH in my 1988 560SL. Vibration diminishes significantly when I let off on gas. The rear flex disk has the cracks shown and it will be replaced.

However I'm not sure if I found the root cause. Is this significant enough to be felt. Ive seen flex disks in the past with problems but they were always significantly worse than this. Of course they weren't on my car so who knows.

Also I'm having difficulty removing the aft part of the driveshaft. CD says to disconnect parking break leaver which I am about to try. It still doesn't look like its going to give me enough room. I almost got it out through the front but the aft flange hooks on the center bearing support. Any tips.

If its like the w123

Then you remove the parking brake linkage and drop the little cross member that the carrier bearing is sitting on. Then there are two big nuts, one just a little smaller then the other just forward of the carrier bearing, right on the drive shaft. I think one (the small one) is 1 and 1/16th. A good crescent wrench will hold it while you loosen the large one with a big channel locks. Sounds difficult, but it really isn't hard. That will allow you to shorten the drive line by about 6 inches. Make sure you mark both pieces of the drive line with a good marker before you take them apart, though some have two little raised lines on the one piece and one raised line on the other piece. The singe raised line has to be lined up between the double raised line. If you can't find that, mark it with white paint. Since your in there that far, better take a good look at the carrier bearing and the rubber mount it sits in. It also is a very good source of vibrations, and the rubber is probably really rotten. Then to finish it all up, replace the bearing also. There is a good write up with pictures in the DIV section, but it is on the W123.

On the W126's the driveshafts do go bad, I have seen a few people vibration problems. Some can be fixed with new engine and trans mounts, as well as a new center bearing and mount. This brings everything back into alighnment. Does the R107 have a center support bearing?

If the flex disc doesn't fix it, I'd do all the mounts, and if that doesn't work, have CT Driveshaft take a look at it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did find the drive shaft will come out with the parking brake removed. I didn't think it would help but it just made it. I will probably have CT drive shaft balance it since I don't want to put the whole thing all back together only to take it apart for something else. The flex disk appears to be obvious but not obvious enough.
