The sump had been overfilled with oil during the last service, it was at least 0.5 liters if not 1 liter above the maximum mark. Pumped out some of the oil last weekend at a small shop, left it slightly below maximum

Dashboard clock lost a few pixels but got them back after some days

Airbag system does not have malfunctions apparently, the AIRBAG OFF signal comes off when there are people on both front seats. It just takes a bit longer to "recognize" weight of a person in the front right seat (2-3 minutes)

Fount out after a VIN check that both bodywork paint(vario-color) and leather color are a rare option, "outside normal color range". I still don't rate them as beautiful, but it's funny anyway

Paint code is Z98, ranges from light-blue-gray to a tint of violet depending on light
Leather code is 251, Nappa leather in two tints of anthracite (dark & light)

Changed today the sparkplugs, fuel filter and diagnosed at an independent shop.

On old sparkplugs cylinder #2 and #6 did not fire at all! Plugs were not fouled, just had a huge gap, much over 1mm (consumed center electrode) and they were rust-colored

Checked for other stored errors, there were no MAF-related or injector-related errors. Computer reported "catalyst efficiency below threshhold" and slight misfires at idle from cylinder #6.

The service reminder has been reset.

Should diagnose again in the near future.

http://www.accommodationz.co.nz/economycalculator.html

gives 14.13 per gallon. I take that to be a UK gallon, which equates to 11.73 per US gallon.

The worst I've ever had out of my M103 or M104 engines is 20 per US gallon, and that was in a W126. That's with mixed and fairly careful driving, but even with city driving you should be getting the 16 mpgUS claimed by MB for the city cycle on the M104. I'd be horrified if I dipped below 20 mpgUK. With no fuel-consumption calculator on board, all my figures are from complete full fill-up records.

Thank you but it's not M104 E320, it's a M112

Indicated fuel economy on a mixed-driving trip (~3/4 highway, 1/4 city) was 11.3 liters/100 km. That was before the tune-up of today

I should try a bit more highway driving to see how it performs, but by now I'm pretty sure the computer's calculations are fouled up by crawling, stop-and-go traffic

Later Edit:

- mixed driving, ~3/4 highway, ~1/4 city: 11.3 l/100km
- mixed driving, ~1/2 highway, ~1/2 city: 14.2 l/100km
- city heavy traffic, not crawling: 17-18 l/100km
- >2000km of mixed driving, ~3/4 city heavy traffic, ~1/4 highway: 14.3 l/100km

Front suspension is ~10mm higher than rear (measured with a meter tape from tire to fender). All rear-wheel drive Mercedes' I have seen were lower on the front and higher on the rear

Accelerates a bit better with new sparkplugs, but the power to weight ratio is still not sports-car like

It still doesn't roll, but it pitches! Any hard push on the throttle and it raises the nose like a greyhound searching for game

A nice bit of wisdom for M112 owners:

Have changed the oil last week, the previous owner had poured in some skunk-piss from Yacco, only God knows what kind of grade it was - and while under throttle the engine made a strange, sewing-machine-like sound. The parts shop found in the database the recommended grade was MB 229.1, 10W40 viscosity semi-synthetic (not 229.3 as FSS system is not useful in third world countries like Romania, should stick to fixed changes and major brand oils). Used 7.5 litres of Mobil Super S 10W40, API SL/CF - and immediately after filling up and cranking the engine, the ticking noise was gone for good! Hope the previous muck-claiming-to-be-oil in the engine has not damaged the valve timing system yet....

Regards,

Some idiot who thought driving in heavy traffic and speaking in his cellphone was a cool idea hit our Mercedes this week

Front left fender and door are mangled, the wheel has been hit as well and bent inwards. As a proof of Mercedes strength, inner door trim was not moved even half an inch, there was no need for the airbag to inflate and it could still operate the window and run under it's own power. The idiot's car looks like an accordion from front bumper to end of front hood

The workshop (independent, not dealer) has examined the car and asked a reasonable price for sheetmetal repairs and painting, yet they claim the entire front suspension on the left side has to be replaced, spindle, bearing, ball joints, suspension arm, steering arm etc which would make for repair costs in the $4,000 range. For legal reasons insurance would not cover the cost.

I find it weird to replace the long list of parts they suggested, at it's best the suspension arm is bent, but the rest!?... it seems they are trying to make some money during crisis times...

Mercedes back on its wheels and running for the last two weeks, thanks God

Replaced door and front spoiler, repaired fender, replaced mangled spindle and wheel bearing, repainted everything to standard. Fixed a few electrical gremlins by myself also, cleaned the interior thoroughly, did some trips around the city. Wheel alignment is needed and will be done in the near future.

Regards,

~Nautilus
