1995 C280 Random Starting Problems

All,
I am having the strangest problems with a (new to me) 1995 C280. The car when I bought it started fine. Then it started randomly not starting. I replaced the OVP relay and the fuel relay, and put in a new battery and that seemed to help for a while. Here is the strange part - there is a red cable that looks like it should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery (exact length, size of terminal etc). *sometimes* when I touch this to the positve terminal, I hear a buzzing sound and feel the fuel relay click. Sometimes (not always) the dash lights also come on, and the car starts when I crank it. Sometimes when I remove this cable, the car continues to run, and sometimes the car dies. (almost reverse behavior). If I leave the red cable connected to the battery, the battery runs flat.

So, In summary, sometimes with the red cable disconnected, the car will start (I hear what I assume is fuel pump run just after I turn the ignition on). The car will start and run just fine.

Sometimes, I need to touch the red cable to the battery for a second or two and the car will start and run fine when I crank it.

Sometimes, I need to touch the red cable to the battery and start the car with the cable connected to the battery, and the car will run when the cable is removed.

and finally, sometimes, I need to touch the cable to the battery and the car will start when cranked, but die as soon as the cable is removed.

Does anyone have *any* idea what could be going on? The guy I bought the car from says the harness was redone a couple of months ago.

This is driving me nuts!!
Thanks
Ian

If I read the thread right?
Did some one hot wire the fuel pump because of a faulty (intermitent) fuel pump relay?
It sounds like occasionally the relay kicks in and the pump works then you don't need the hot wire other times the relay doesn't respond and the wire keeps the pumps running.

I dont think this is a hot wire. The red cable is pretty heafty gauge, and looks like it was meant to be there. It was disconnected when I bought the car... very strange.
