Shifter play
What would coz the shifter to play? Could it be the cable or some clips that
is suppose to hold the shifter in place? Coz everytime I put my gears in drive it feels like you're in 3rd and not in drive. Please advise if got any part number for the parts or technical pic. that I can show the dealer for parts. Thanks |

Mic280,
Can you be a little more specific? Is there significant "loose" movement in selected gears? Does the shifter slip too easily into other gears?

Dave,
Gears are not shifitng into other gears. Sorry, I was referring to the shifter stem itself. As you know everytime we shift that stick into gears it stays put and not lose like you feel that it did'nt go into the proper slot. Thanks |

So you are saying the physical shifter knob (leather handle) is loose? Like you can turn it left and right a little bit?
If so, I had the same problem. Fortunately, the shifter on the S420 was the EXACT same. I switched them the day before we turned the S420 in for the CLK. Though I did attempt to fix mine. Once I removed it, I pulled the plastic part on the inside of the shifter out and could tell where it was broken. I tried to correct the problem with some glue, but it just wasn't working properly. You might want to try and fix it... ? Otherwise, you'll just need to get a new one... And you can replace it yourself, it's not *too* difficult.

See the attached thread, if the shifter is loose, the plastic bushings are broken.

Thanks for all your input. I've talked to the mechanic who saw the problem u nderneath the shifter. It's like a small plastic knob bushing that holds down the shifter with a pin lock. However< I just don't know if you could just buy this pc.
of bushing or you are force to get the whole assy with the cable. Please advise if I can just get the plastic bushing. Again thanks for all your i input. |

The plastic bushing is less than $1.00 each, two required, one at the shifter and one at the neutral safety swithch. It is best to remove the shifter rod for installation.

Thank you everyone. Really appreciate fior all your support.
Please advise if I should start removing the stem from the top or I've to go underneath the car to replace both bushing? If possible please provide the basic step in replacing these. Again thank you all. |

From the bottom, all you need is to remove the metal clip on both ends, and force the bushing into linkage rod.

just a note on this: they may be a bit hard to push the shifter bushings in. you can try a few ways to help this, first lube up the bushings( common sense). second you can try soaking those little bushings in hot water for about 1 minute to soften them up a bit. there are other little tricks like trimming a bit of the side you are pushing in but thats not really recommended unless youve done it before. hope that helps.
