16 valve won't stay running

I have an 87 16v with a 85 16v motor...
Before the car stopped running altogether, it had shut-off spontaniously while I was driving. This occured for a day or two, and when it happened I just turned the ignition off then on, and continued driving...
Now, the car won't even start, and when it does it won't stay running.
I think it is a fuel related problem, but have no clue...could it be electrical, too?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

been there, done that

Yep, that one sounds all too familiar Andrew.

My '87 would just shut right the heck off out of nowhere with no symptom, indication, etc. And it would then start RIGHT back up by turning the key off / on. Spooky.

Replaced the fuel pump relay (large black regtangular multi-pronged unit located behind easily removable panel in back of battery box, it's one of the 2 there I think) for $160 or so, took all of about 23 seconds, and voila! It hasn't happened in the 8 months since. But mine would re-start no prob and stay running. I'd start there regardless.

NOTE* I'm told (Hendy) that there are 2 relays you can choose, the US and the Euro one. Be sure to go w/ the Euro, it provides the 7000 or 7200 (?) rpm redline that matches your motor, not the stupid 6800 (or so?) US one. I didn't know this until recently and would have opted for the Euro. Let us know how you fare, good luck, drive fast!

Andrew-

Well, thanks for the accolades, but let's hope this does solve your issue! That plastic panel is against the firewall and just slides right out. The relay resides next to the OVP relay (has a red GM type fuse on top), so it's the other one. Has several silver prongs that plug it in, just grab ahold and it wiggles right out. Pop the other one in and give it a rip to see if you're cured. Good luck, let us know.

Question: why don't I see your name / car out there under the 2.3 / 2.5-16 survey I'm trying to take here!!!???? Get to it my man! It'd be good to have an area where our names are all together for easy future reference to bounce things (like THIS) off of.

THANKS DONNIE!

The FPR was the culprit!

Now that the car is running again, I'd like to work on why its sooo unresponsive.

In short, the car hesitates horribly. Almost as if its flooding, and can't catch its breath...any ideas?

I'm pretty sure its not an engine problem. Before I swapped engines with my 85 16v, the car had the same problem it has now--very, very sluggish. (The 85 engine ran like a banshee when it was in the Euro chassis)

So, what could cause two separate engines to run the same sluggish way?

I'll bet you left the old ignition coil mounted to the side of the inner fender. I'd start there.

Same thing happened to me recently. The Relay went and then another one went too. The fuel pump itself had started to go bad and ate the two relays.

Fuel cutoff.

Where can you get the European fuel cutoff relay? I have the us version and have the 6800 rpm cutoff. Is it safe to take the motor up that high? Thanks, Joe
