window woes

The right front and left rear windows on my 300D work only intermittently. this morning the window(power) went down but would not go back up. i opened the hood to check the fuses but all looked good. when i closed the fuse box without changing any fuses the window was working again. in the evening i put my window down again and now it wont go up again. the motors dont make any sounds or anything but they do work.
any input would be apprecaiated.

The quickest way I know to isolate the problem would be to remove the door interior panel and check for power at the terminal connector for the motor on the door frame. If there is power and the motor doesn't turn, you need a new motor. If the motor turns but the regulator doesn't move, you've probably got a cracked regulator frame. This is common on older 123's. The regulator and motor can be replaced separately on this car, so don't assume you need both.

If you don't have power to the terminal connection on the door frame, obviously trace the wiring back to the battery to find where the fault is located.

I have replaced regulators and overhauled motors, so I'm at leart speaking from some experience, but I'm by no means a pro.

HTH,

Talking Y'R Windows

The cause for your intermittantly operating windows is mostlikely in the power feed. MB splits them like that R.F. & L.R. and L.F. & R.R. per circuit protection.
Pull that fuse out, you'll probably discover a burnt off end contact.
Replace as necessary.

Good Luck

Use a tester light to check on both ends of the fuse. If the fuse is OK then the Relay switch may be short...swap it with the other one. I think they are in the second row from the front(300sd is).

i guessits gotta be the fuse then because i know for sure the motor and rails are good. i am pretty good with the regulator andmotors as at some point the rail that the window sits on totally ripped the gears out. i had to tap out new holes and install a bolt where ther was a pop rivet holding the gear to the assembly. anyway they both Rf and LR go out together if that is the way MB splits them up then that makes sense. the fuse looked OK so i assumed they are good but i have been wrong about thet before. thanks for all the input guys. i will post the final result.

Before you go and rip the door apart and get heavy into the troubleshooting - swap your window switch with one from another window and see if that solves it. I had the same intermittent driver's window while driving around Chicago on the tollways - when you want it down it stayed up. When you wanted it up it stayed down. Mine is a 560sel and I have changed 2 window switches so far.

Thanks for the input everyone.
ulitmately it was the #a fuse controlling the rf and lr windows. the wierd thing is that the fuse looked fine except for some wear on the end caps. that is why my visual inspection didn't turn up any thing. but that is an excelent point about the window switches. when i first got my 300d none of the switches worked consistantly and some not at all. i removed all the switches, cleaned the contacts with emery paper and like magic they all worked. keep this in mind future generations.!!!!
