Thanks for the idea Michael.

This seems likely to be the core of the problem, only looked at the plastic cover so far but it appears to have snowbank damage.....[problems started immediately after I ran over a big snowbank and hicentered the car near that area] I'm hoping for disconnected wiring or something simple of course. Then I can just be happy about all the new expensive parts just installed on the car. Makes me appreciate the manual transfer case on my '88 Toyota pickup and it's manually locking hubs. I'm going to return the car to the shop that did the work tomorrow with your tips and with those from Gilly and Whipple. I like keeping cars for a long time and taking good care of them. I'm just out of my league with the modern electronics.
Thanks again,
Ron Jolliffe

Two blinks is supposed to mean that the control unit is faulty but I have not heard anyone ever having one replaced. There are two switches in the system, one pressure switch at the tranfer case and one pedal brake/stop lamp switch that also powers a solenoid y3 for the rear diff clutch. When you brake it opens the 12V power circuit to a solenoid at the valve. There is usually 3 flashes when there is a problem here. Power is fed via the 10A fuse on the OVP relay.

Here's a 4MATIC lamp code chart, (ohm test with ignition off)
Impulse Possible Cause/Remedy
1 No Faults
2 N48 4MATIC Control Unit (behind battery)
3 Brake lamp switch S9/7
4 LF ABS sensor, airgap or plug measure 1.1 to 2.3k ohms
5 RF ABS sensor, airgap or plug measure 1.1 to 2.3k ohms
6 Rear ABS sensor, airgap or plug measure 0.6 to 1.6kohms
7 Defective ABS N30 Control Unit or all 3 speed sensors
8 y1 or y3 solenoid or OVP fuse open measure 5 to 7 ohms at
solenoids or 11 to 14 ohms across pins 4 and 6 with N48 out.
9 y2 or y3 solenoid or OVP fuse open measure 5 to 7 ohms at
solenoids or 11 to 14 ohms across pins 6 and 8 with N48 out.
10 y3 solenoid, OVP fuse or brake lamp switch
11 steering angle sensor or OVP relay

With ignition on and the N48 module out you can test each solenoid and fuse by jumpering pin 2 (GND) to:
pin 4 for y1 and solenoid audibly clicks. (Front axle valve)
pin 6 for y2 and solenoid audibly clicks. (Centre Diff valve)
pin 8 for y3 and solenoid audibly clicks. (Rear Diff valve)

Hydraulic problems illuminate the fault lamp continuously if there is no pressure or the pressure switch is bad. Between pins 2 and 20 should read infinity with no pressure or 0 ohms when there is system pressure. No code is stored.

Red face Big Thank you to Whipplem104

You are the prize winner. The elusive 4matic problem I have been throwing energy and money at WAS the ruptured hydraulic damper as you diagnosed over the internet,
The MBZ dealer had it plugged into their diagnostic computer for 2 hours and didn;'t catch it, nor did the independent shop that replaced the transfer case and other parts. Again , Thank You, Ron Jolliffe

Thank you

[quote=iread;1996055] The problem is corrected, [see hydraulic damper rupture tip from WhippleM] I will print out all the information you provided and keep it in my Chassis manual. Thank you for the thought you put into this, My '91TE looks just like Hazens'. I've had it 17 years and it is perfect, now I expect to keep it another 17.
