450 SLC window
Just inherited a '74 450 SLC that's been sitting in the California sun for two years. The louvers inside the rear side glass have large bubbles from the sun exposure. Can the glass be opened from the inside or outside, and the louvers removed and repaired? Thanks for any assistance.

This can be done but it is a significant (not major though) job. You have to remove the window assemblies from inside the car. Doing so entails the removal of the back seats, side walls, top & side moldings. Then you have to carefully pry the glass off of the plastic frames. It's easiest at that point to take the louvers to a body shop and have them paint them for you. Then you can re-assemble.
If you're going to do this, it's best t o clean and re-lube the rear window asseblies as well. I did my 5 liter SLC and it looks great. Steve Guilford 107 026 12 000677 107 024 12 011890 |

To avoid problems with condensation in the future, the importance of *perfect* sealing cannot be overstated!
Glass shops use a special type of sealant for double pane residential windows. It remains very pliable & is intended for this type of application (hermetic sealing). I also recall someone once mentioning putting some desiccant beads inside as well. Flushing with argon or nitrogen may be a bit of overkill, but if you’re into that sort of thing… RTH |
