Start Circuit Capacitor

My 1996 SL600 has a capacitor in the starting circuit. I'm trying to figure out the function of this capacitor as I have never seen one in any other car. Any ideas.

The W140 chassis was MB's first car with a "CAN" bus. Capacitors are used to suppress power surges. Power(voltage) surges can create havoc thru out the can system.

That is why it is there.
