The wood panel at the shifter gate on the W210 is clamped in...you were right on the ripping-it-off part...but be sure to rip-it-off gentle.

I don't know about the W210 (I only worked on manual shifted W210s), but on all (older) MB models the indicator for the selected gear is just a fiber optic wire that is connected to the gear shaft and ends at the bulb for total illumination of the gear selector box...If the auto selector box on the W210 is the same as on the older models, this fiber optic wire is loose and not connected properly to the gear shaft anymore.
