Front end alignment.....
Just put new guide rod kits in. Should I try the local independent guy or trust only a MB dealer?

Just called the dealer ( 1 hour away )
4 wheel alignment $129 front alignment $69 Local guy 4 wheel $40

If this is for a W126, the local guy should be fine due to the relatively simple nature of this chassis' steering geometry. My flame suit is on, and I realize the *correct* answer is to always use the dealer, but I have had adequate results with the $40 guys. The tires on my W126 are wearing almost perfectly evenly.

Aligning an older Benz is no big deal. As long as the alignment guy gives a hoot about his work, there shouldn't be any problems taking the cheaper route. Just make sure they have the "spreader bar". This is a tool used to exert outward pressure on the forward side of the front wheels while adjusting the toe-in. Ask if they have this tool. If not, go someplace else.

I called a few other shops and told them I have an older MB. They told me they would not do it because they don't have the proper tools. I did call another place that makes leaf springs. They do alignments on cars but mostly specialize in larger trucks. They said they could take my car. I am going to make an apt next week. We'll see.
