MB E320 not starting all lights on

I have a 96 E320, once the key is engaged all gauges are activated, battery is good but will not start, I noticed that I have to move the shifter to Neutral and back to Park before it starts. Now my problem is when I put it on Drive , I have to push the shifter farther down to engage the gear, it seems like I have forced the shifter too much and now its out of alignment but I'm still worried about the starting issue. Is there a safety switch that needs adjusting on the shifter.

Sounds like a shift bushing issue. The neutral safety switch is on the trans if your car is early enough to still have the 4spd non electronic controlled trans.

Do I have to take down the transmission apart to replace that bushing? Is that accessible from underneath without removing major parts?

No need to take anything apart. The bushing and the Neutral Safety switch are within arm's reach of each other, but it is a tight fit. You will have an easier time if you use small (1/4" ratchet) and/or slim tools.

The switch is attached to the trans, and the bushing is on a metal rod that runs horizontally, and forward, to the shifter rod.

EDIT: I should clarify that the bushing is at the Junction of those two rods.

Replacing the safety switch and bushing did the job. Thank you all.
I have a new problem, somebody hit my driver side mirror and I'm trying to find a replacement for a reasonable price coz the dealer is asking $500 for the assy and all I need is the inside component and mirror, can I use a 94-00 C220/230/280( 56551L) instead? I will use the old cover but will it fit?
