96 C280 Brake Fluid Replacement
I need to change the brake fluid on 96 C280 with ABS. What is the basic procedure for doing this and will any special tools be needed? What type of brake fluid should I use as replacement?
Thanks Martineau Gauda |

I once attempted to change the brake fluid... I ordered this thing called E-Z Bleed ($40), a device you need to bleed each individual caliper. I got the system... and the brake fluid (Mercedes-Benz), and went to work... I couldn't do it! I didn't want to take any risks because if you get air into the system that can be a real problem.
To make a long story short, I would let your mechanic do it. It only cost me $40 at a Mercedes dealer! Hate to discourage you, but unless you really know what you are doing, I would not do the brake fluid or trans fluid. Other than that... you can do most basic maintenance yourself.

If you do choose to do it yourself, make sure you use at least DOT 4 fluid.
You can manually bleed it or use a pressure bleeder to make the job much easier. Make sure the reservoir is topped off with fluid, build pressure by in the system using either method and start bleeding at the wheel furthest from the driver, then work your way in. Let the old stuff flow out until the new, fresh fluid is coming out, then close the bleed screw and move to the next wheel. Make sure not to get anything on the paint, and make sure to keep the reservoir full to avoid pumping air into the system, then you will have to start over again.
