E320 door check strap
Yesterday I removed the inside door panel on the drivers door of the E320 and peeled back a little bit of the plastic liner at the bottom right. I did not totally remove it. I am going to replace my door check strap over the next couple weeks and my question is - is there a hole on the inside of the door somewhere large enough to pull the strap through? What section of the door is it in? Any thoughts and advice will be appreciated.
I was not able to find pics/description, etc on the CD - or it was not under door anyway.

On the 126 (not sure on yours) you remove the bolt on the doorstrap, then three screws inside the door panel after peeling back the plastic liner. Stap pulls though. CD calls for locktite on screws when reinstalling.

Hi Jim,
I am in dire need of this repair, too, and I was going to order the CD-ROM from the dealer, my question to you is are you referring to the MB CD-ROM purchased from the dealer ($165) or is there another available? Also, did you get your replacement strap (door check) from the MB Dealer or did you find one cheaper elsewhere? Anyone with any experience on replacing a W210 Door check, please offer any helpful info. Thanks! -Tom

I am referring to the MB CD rom for this car. Also, I was at the dealer today while at lunch and picked up a check strap. This thing has to go toward the inside of the door for removal. I will probably remove the inside of the door and liner over the next week or so and try to figure out how to get it in/out. Any advise from anybody would be much appreciated.

I will try to record it on film and post it but for right now I still would like to get an answer on exactly where the hole is that you have to remove that thing through. I went to the MB dealer today and picked one up and I just have not found the right hole to pull it through yet.

TECH MODERATORS please help us!!!
This must be a FAQ, the dealer says they replace LOTS of them, so, how do you get the door panel off safely, you tech moderators!!!
Yes, the MB dealer bent me over to the tune of $45 for this part today. I found it on the MERCEDEDSSHOP.COM site for $18 but, alas, it's outta stock now that I actually NEED it! Thanks, -Tom

I know how to get the door panel off. I will try to do this job this weekend and take pictures of the process. When I removed the door panel this weekend I did not take enough of the plastic liner off to be able to see which hole it comes out through. I will find it this coming weekend. I picked the part up at the dealer yesterday (for the E320) and it was under $20.

here are pictures and description on changing the door check strap on the E320. Thanks to Jeric for helping me out on this as far as getting it on the web - to me the easy part was changing the strap. Thanks to Blake for helping with the pics - that is his foot in one of the photos - he is 8. Thanks to everyone on mercedesshop.com that has helped me gain the confidence to do this type of stuff.

Door Strap Replacement
Great instructions on replacing the door strap.
I have a 260e with noisy door straps that are really embarrasing. Do they need to be totally replaced or can they be removed and lubricated? I have found it is impossible to lubricate them without removing them. |

Replace them - they are cheap and the ones I pulled out were shot. I did not show the three bolts holding the straps in place. Go ahead and pick up a new strap and once you pull the plastic back it is quite obvious where the bolts are. There is only one underneath the plastic. The other two are exposed inside the leading edge of the door.

glad I procrastinated (for once)!
engatwork,
Thanks for the EXCELLENT info! I hope my W210 is the same as your car, you made it look easy! The strap assembly looks the same, except there is no pin to drive out, it is simply held to the door post with a Torx screw (bolt?). Maybe that's why the strap for my car cost $25 more than yours (certainly my dealer is not GREEDY or anything ). -Tom
