Windshield Trim on ML

This weekend while washing and waxing my 99 ML320, I noticed that the trim around the windshield is beginning to show signs of drying and cracking along the roof. I checked a buddies 98 ML320 and noticed the same thing. Does anyone else have this same problem?

I washed mine this weekend but see no wear of any kind. But this is a Texas truck. Could there be issues with salt in the winter working its way under the moulding and doing damage from the inside?
