need advise on buying 1993 300d

there is a 93 300d that i can buy for between 8000.00 & $9000.00
the car has 140,000 miles on it,2nd owner, car has early records, but the current owner did not do maint by the book,he just fixed things as they came up!
does this seem like a fair price for the car and what can i expect in repairs? my worry is that it might be a money pit!
please advise
thanks in advance

I'd pay the money and have it inspected thoroughly by either a trusted dealership or trusted independent. When I bought one of my cars sight-unseen, I had a local MBZ dealer do a "Starmark" inspection. Worth every penny, and the only way you'll know if you're getting a deal or getting screwed

The price sounds in line, and if the car has been maintained well, the mileage should not worry you. If you are not equipped or capable of doing an inspection on the car, I agree with Michael's reccomendation. Have it gone over.

There is one thing that would be difficult to discover by an inspection. Does the car use oil? The only thing you can do about this is ask the person who has been driving the car if it uses oil. You need to do this while looking them straight in the eye. If you think they are lieing, be careful.

Good luck,

When I got mine, it was down on power but what did I know? And it shifted a bit weird...huh. Well, it's a Diesel and they're peculiar, right?

Uh, wrong. It's a modern MBZ Diesel, and it may be down on power but not finesse. Turns out it wasn't getting any turbo boost because of a simple vacuum leak, so Bam it now has adequate power and can accelerate up a hill

Once my car went under the knife (and I spent a grand), it now runs like it should, no excuses.

Get it checked by someone you trust

Hi,
Here is my 2c worth. Please make sure there is no 'blow by' problem. An easy way to tell would be to open the air filter housing and make sure there is no motor oil in it.
