96 C280 and Snap-On MT2500 Communication Problem

Hi,

Have MTG2500 (ver 6) (MT2500 Graphing Model), with MB-1 cable and S-20 key, with 2.4 (2001) Mercedes primary cartridge using 38 pin under hood connector on 96 C280.

Three modules are listed in the scanner menu. DM, HFM, EGS

Scanner connects right away to the DM module and properly reports codes and data, but does not appear to connect with HFM, and reports communication failure when trying to communicate with the EGS transmission modules.

When attempting communication with the HFM module it just reports "Initializing Communication, Please Wait". I have waited 7 min or more several times and it still does not establish communication nor does it give a failed communication message. Different when trying to connect to the transmission module, then it does report failed communication within 1 min.

The unit does not appear to be locked up when attempting to communication with the HFM module and I have carefully followed the connection/ ignition switch on procedure.

Could this be a personality key problem? Do they often fail?

Am I waiting long enough, > 7 min for the connection to the HFM.

Should I try disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU?

This is a popular scanner any other help is most appreciated.

Thanks

Martineau

I did further testing to better define the problem with long attempting to communicate with HFM/ME2 Module that is listed on module the menu.

I set vehicle selection on scanner to "Test" and Module to HFM. Now the scanner reports "No Communication error when attempting to connect for HFM. When set to ME2 in the Test mode there is infinite wait. I almost sure that the 96 C280 Mercedes has HFM. How can I make sure that the car uses HFM instead of ME2 as 96 was a ECU transition Year?

Any help?

Thanks
