240D will not start

Hi Everyone,

Had a lot of reading from the forum and learnt a lot. I would like to ask for your help. I have a 1974 240D. Saying that it started life as a petrol and was fitted with a diesal engine before I bought it. It has been laid up for the last 3 years as I was out of the country. When I tried to start it It kicked into life but cut out, I think there is a problem with fuel starvation.I opened one of the fuel lines at the injectors and got my wife to turn the engine and no fuel came out. I have read on here that you can manually bleed the system but I do not know how to do it. The engine I have has the red knob that you fill with engine oil on the fuel pump.
I would be very grateful for any help and advice.

Regards RP.

A easy way to bleed engine with fresh battery,is to remove and fill main filter with fuel.
Note 3 years your fuel might be to weak for ignition also.

Welcome to the forum

You might want to drain your old fuel like oldsinner111 suggests. I know you've got diesel not petrol but it has been sitting for quite a while. There might be water in your tank - who knows?

I've added some information to the picture you posted to help you out.

Next time you'll probably get a quicker response if you post in the diesel section of the forum

Diesel Discussion - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum

Perhaps a moderator can move it for you (if you want).

The first thing I'd do is undo the line on the primary filter and make sure it is diesel going through the pipe!

Then use the hand pump to bleed the system

Then give it another whirl!
