1989 300E, bad A/C compressor, noise?

1989 300E

Got a blown compressor clutch, and there is a fluttering/rattling/mild grinding kind of noise coming from that general area of the engine. It doesn't sound alarming, just sorta "loud", you know? It seems the noise started right around the time the compressor blew.

Is that possible, that it's just the blown compressor making "dead compressor" noises, or is it possible the water pump is starting to go? I can handle either of those jobs, as well as the oil pump, I guess. Any well-known "noise issues" here?

The car runs great, and I'd just as soon wait until next spring to replace the compressor, unless of course it's dangerous to wait. Or unless I could do the swap myself, but I've never worked with freon before....

Thanks,
Jimmy

Used to own an 89 300E. The compressor clutch bearing let go at about 140,000 miles. If this is the case with your car, don't delay in getting the compressor replaced. Don't try to replace just the clutch-it's not worth the hassle. If the bearing seizes, you will be dead in the water.

It may be the compressor but...

Check the little tensioning belt shock by the front of the engine. If the bolt and nut fall off it makes a metal to metal sound. A lto cheaper than a new compressor.

It's the compressor. Found a local guy who seems to be an ace individual who will install a rebuilt compressor for a little over $1,000.00. Thanks for all the input.
