Dashboard lights stay on, even with key out

Hi there, i posted this question before but the thread died and i still have the issue with my 1992 400e w124 m119. I have gotten great advice on this board; I am relatively new to the MB world having owned this car for one year; i did drive a 1977 300d in college from 1990 to 1995 but it was my father's car, so he took it back.

Some of the interior lights stay on all the time (the driver's seat light memory light, the shifter light, the rear dome light button light (but not the dome light itself) and the rear headrest button light.

They stay on even when the key is out of the ignition. So i pulled the fuse for them and now have no radio or hazard lights.

I pulled the dash buttons (as has been suggested) but it had no effect. the rest of the lights stay on. i did not disconnect the seat or shifter lights yet.

its mysterious and annoying so any clues might be helpful.

btw, perhaps i should mention i have an issue with my seatbelt relay because the driver's side puddle light and the front dome light do no go on when the drivers side door is open, but do when the passenger's is. I never bothered to fix it.

but this problem is new.

thanks!

You did not specify whether the headlights were switched on or off during this scenario...

...I'm assuming here that the headlight switch would have initially been set to the "ON" position for said lights to be illuminated in the first place. Whether of not the key is in the ignition doesn't matter.

I would also assume that you turned the headlight switch to the "OFF" position, and those lights remained illuminated?

Since this issue is concentrated on the dash, door and console lights, it would have to be an issue with the headlight switch, or a loose ground that is shared by those switches.

sorry, lights are off. key is out.

Not all the lights on the dash stay on, for example the vent lights and hazard switch light go on and off like they should.

the headlights work normally; but the switch does seem funky; the parking lights seem not to work right; sometimes the right one workd sometimes the left, and now the fog lights wont work...though i suspect i just disconnected it when i was messing with the switch just now.

it does not matter if the headlight switch was ever turned on off. as soon as i put the fuse back in, the lights go on.

btw, all the window switches also stay on as does the light for the sunroof switch.

i have also taken the roof light/switch out to see if perhaps feedback in it might be source, but nothing changed.

i will twiddle with the headlight switch to see if i can ever get them to go off. i have tried a bit with no luck.

could it be a relay or control module? i mentioned this to my indy and his first guess was the headlight switch OR the light control module (a $300 part...)

but i have a sinking feeling it might be a ground loose somewhere. when i turn the radio on an off now i hear a clicking/popping sound through the speakers that i never heard before that to me sounds like a ground issue.

headlight switch imploded!

not sure if its the problem, but my headlight switch imploded today...really. suddenly no dash lights, one one side of parking lights, front and rear, and not ability to turn it to the standing lights or pull out for fog lights. I removed the switch and it sounds like a baby's rattle in there. that cant be good. new switch on the way.

btw, anyone know where you can pick up the retaining nut that holds the panel and switch together...my switch seems not to have one...
