Question 420sel smog pump

1991 420SEL 170K.
Smop pump failed. I live in Florida with no emissions testing. I'm thinking of removing the entire AIR system. Will this cause any fault codes or engine running or idle issues?
What else besides the exhaust manifold tubing, hoses, vacuum lines etc. should I remove, plug, ground etc.

Thanks,

The air pump on that & most MB's is a warm-up device.
Helps to get the catalyst working quicker. just remove the belt.

Only a California version will turn on the check engine light.

Like MB Doc said, I just removed the belt when I did the water pump, and never put it back on.

Yeah, the clutch on the pump only engages for a minute or so during warm-up. Then the pulley just freewheels without turning the pump - just like the AC clutch. My 6-cylinder only has one belt; so I just umplugged the wire to the clutch. There's a connector under the coolant bottle.
Also, there is a valve in the air line behind the pump that opens via a vacuum line when the pump engages. I plugged the vacuum line to keep the valve closed all the time, just in case the reverse check valve (also in the air line) failed.

Thanks, I removed everything. Pump bracket, hoses, wires, vac lines. Removed the check valve in the block and installed a pipe plug. I like it clean. Like it was never there.

I disassembled mine. Cleaned all the dirt out, greased the bearings and reassembled it. Surprisingly it operated quietly.
