Power Windows Problem, Codes 96 and 97

A friend and I removed the front hydraulic cylinders on his '96 SL320 to have them repaired. Now the power windows don't work! They are fully lowered and will not raise. All fuses in the trunk and the engine compartment are good. The soft top controller is fine.

I read codes from the soft top controller and found 96 and 97 were set and would not clear -- something about the Hall Efect sensors not being normalized. Looking-up these codes in the DM the solution is to replace the power window motors, and no troubleshooting steps are mentioned. I suppose I'll go through all the electrical tests associated with the motors anyway before replacing them.

I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with these codes and if there is no recourse other than to replace the motors. Any comments or ideas are much appreciated.

Bob
