Wont stay running

1996 MB e320, had some problems with the charging system, after changing the battery and then the altenator got that settled. Now, I go to start the car and it takes 5 or 6 tries to get it running, when it does start the idle surges for a short while then it stalls. Now when I go to start it it starts then dies out in a few seconds. When the car was running it showed 14 volts across the battery, but now when the car dies out the charge battery light comes on. The battery is charging now due to the number of start attemps so I dont know if its still getting 14 across the battery because it wont stay running long enough to check it. The problem is more the surging idle, then the car not wanting to stay running, any suggestions? I cleaned the mas with mas cleaner, I am new to these cars and I am already starting to pull my hair out. Any help would be great on where I might go from here.
