M103 spark plug wire problem

My 1991 300E has a problem--I can't get the spark plug wires off. Cylinders 1 and 3 came off with a normal amount of effort; cylinders 2, 4, 5, and 6 are very stubborn. I managed to get wire #2 off with a lot of force using plug wire pliers. Now that I have changed plug #2, I can't get the wire to reattach to the spark plug; it won't "grab" and there's no friction. I suspect my wires are toast; is this the case?

Replacing the plug wires is probably beyond my level of expertise. If I can't get the wire back on, do I need to get it towed two miles to the shop, or can I start it and drive it with the #2 cylinder out?

Thanks for any and all help you can provide,
p. rex
