1992 190E 2.6 A/C stopped cooling when I replaced blower fan switch

Hi,

My fan switch was stuck in the lowest speed setting, so I found one on eBay from a reputable seller. I replace the switch easily enough, and now the A/C, although it blows at all speeds, no longer cools. It was cooling perfectly 30 minutes ago, before I replaced the fan switch. All I did was pull the plug out of the back of the old switch and pull the tiny bulb enclosure out as well and then reconnect both items to the new fan switch. Should I have disconnected the battery before doing this? I'm wondering if I shorted out a relay. I checked the fuses and they seems to be intact. Thanks for any insight or advice.

regards,
Hans in Atlanta

Quick question: should the two pancake-style electric fans behind the grill be running when the A/C is on?

thanks!

It's always a good practice to disconnect the battery when dealing with electric components. Some models require plugging in a device to the cig. lighter to keep the "system" alive. In your case I think just having the radio code handy is sufficient.

My focus is usually the W126 chassis. The fans you refer to are controlled by a temp sensor. And are activated when engine heat reaches a preset level. The fan on myW126 does not activate with the AC unless the temp sensor has already received a signal to do so. All sensors on my W126 are less than a year old. So I trust their reliability.

I have not been able to figure out what happened. I will plan to drop it off at the shop next week. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

Thank you.
