4cyl(m102) to 6cyl(m103) rev counter modification ?

Can the rev counter from a 4cyl (m102) engine be modified to show correctly on a 6cyl(m103) engine ? If it's possible , I''ll be grateful for any instruction on how do I do it .

What do you consider the "rev counter"? If you are talking about the tach, it would be easier to relabel the face. The tach counts engine speed signals and divides by 3 for a six and by 2 for a four.

By rev counter I mean the gauge that shows rpm/min (guess it's call a tachometer). Can the 4-cyl one be modified to divide by 3 ? Searching on the net I found that on same other car makes it's possible.

If one could change it the procedure would be to recode the cluster. That cluster is years too old to recode. You would have to enter the circuit and change the counting chip.

Thanks Steve, so looks like the easiest way will be to just get a tacho from 6-cyl engine (190E 2.6, 300E) .

If the signal is some kind of square wave or pulse that goes between 0 and 12V ( or some other voltage) then someone skilled in electronics should be able to make such an adapter. It would put out 2 pulses for every three that it gets. There was a guy here recently who designed a code reader for pre 95 cars. He could probably program a chip for you. But you would need to tell him the format of the tach signal. I figured that someone somewhere makes such an adapter but I could not find anything with a web search. There is probably such a low need for such a thing. Someone somewhere probably makes one though. Maybe...

mpolli, yes on the net I found info for different car models where they add a potentiometer + resistor to make a 4-cyl tacho work with a 6-cyl engine, I'm sure this could also be done on mercedes cars but since there many tacho units in the scrapyards it'll be easier to just buy one
