Unhappy Gauges only working sometimes

I just purchased a '97 C-230 and the gauges (tac, rpm, temp & gas) work rarely. The time and odometer work all the time and I have checked the fuses under the hood as well as the ones in the trunk and they all look good. Any suggestions? ALSO, when I fill up the car with gas, it spills out. I think that there is a small tube in the trunk unattached that is the problem, but I can't find where it attaches. Is this the proglem for the spillage, and where does it attach to? HELP!!!
