Engine has suddenly developed a severe miss.

I drove my 83 380 sel to a nearby town and it ran perfectly. On the way back it drove normally until the second stop light when it started missing slightly. As I continued to drive the missing got worse and worse until by the time I got home, about 30 miles it was missing so bad and losing so much power I was down to less than 40 miles per hour and praying it would make it. There was also a strong smell of fuel.

I finally made it home, and as I pulled to a stop in the driveway I expected the engine to die immediately, but it idled normally. However, when I give it gas, it begins to sputter and miss.

What's most like to be failing and where do I start trying to diagnose it?

Do some simple stuff.

Remove the distributor cap and check the condition of the contacts in the cap and the rotor.

Look for broken vacuum hoses or connectors.

Look for corroded or loose wires around the ignition control unit and the coil.

Pull a couple of spark plugs and see if they're clean or fouled.

Distributor cap and rotor look good, I'd say they've been replaced fairly recently. No broken vacuum hoses or connectors that I could find. The connections around the ignition coil were lightly corroded, so I cleaned them, but it made no difference. The ignition control unit looked nice and clean. I pulled two spark plugs and other than being a little sooty from running so rich on the way home they weren't fouled.

I decided to replace the ignition coil as the one in it looked original or at least very old. I was able to find the original Bosch at $60. which I thought was pretty good.

Wow! What a difference. Not only did it cure my misfire, it feels like I put in a new engine. This is my first Benz and just thought it was a little doggy from pulling such a heavy car with such a small V8. The coil must have been weak the whole time I've owned it. Now it feels very lively!
